The Older Woman

Ford recently met his future prom date when she dropped in from New York. She's a full month older than him.... and he was pretty excited about this older woman after about 15 seconds.

Jenny, we love your daughter! Abby and I were pretty excited about her, too.

Roommates Unite!

It's pretty amazing when you realize you've known certain friends for, say, 20 years. TWENTY years. Wow. My college roommates and I got together recently at our house, with all the kids. It blew my mind to see them all together. At one point I was in the kitchen alone and I looked outside and realized that God had answered many prayers in the midst of those people gathered together - many, many prayers over the years. He is so good to do that for us and to make our friendships strong over the years and for us all to adore each other's spouses! Amazing!

Fordy, loving the attention. (This fine gent used to be Hugh Grant's look alike. Seriously. When I'd go places with him in college, girls would stop and whisper and point.)
A little ring a round the rosey...
Abby's "cheese" face with "big girl" campbell.
All the kids. Minus Ford and his pal Rose, who's a month older. It blows my mind.
Of course, Abby made everyone watch Veggie Tales while the adults ate dinner.

Abby paints!

Grandmama came recently armed with canvases, acrylic paint and some awesome paint brushes. Abby took took to it right away. To date, we've got 3 masterpieces and a bird house to brag about. Can't wait for future summers when she and her cousins can go to Grandma's house for singing and painting camp!
And while Abby was learning to paint, Fordy was learning to sleep. Poor guy has always had his paci to help him back to sleep -- or we'd rush to his rescue so he wouldn't wake up sister. But it's time to grow up....and with that, he's down to one dream feed and eating at 3am, sleeping until 7am. There are still many nights when we're up 2 and 3 times more than that...but we're getting there. Meanwhile, Abby was on a 5 day nap strike. She'd play in her room and read for an hour....but no sleeping. She made up for it at night going to bed extra early but it was a rough few hours at the end of the day. I'm hoping we've made a turn now -- and we're back to our old sleepy ways.

Firsts

Last week was the first day of BSF. It was a big day -- our own "first day of school" kind of day. We were all ready and out the door at 8:30. This is a big deal for me and we did it ! Hurrah! Getting Abby mentally prepped, dropping her off at a new class with a new teacher -- then getting Ford where he needed to go -- it was a lot (because this is still new to me!) but I was so blessed by the effort. As we started singing hymns I thought that I can't remember the last time I truly quieted my heart ... and what a great thing that was.

Hello Hello Kitty

Last weekend we went to Abby's friend, Grace's party. She kept to herself for most of the party while the other four year olds (I think maybe they were just a bit much for her) bounced in the bounce house. Abs ate her sprinkles sandwich happily on the steps...

and got her face painted with Hello Kitty. She loved the sparkles.

When I heard that Hello Kitty was actually going to show up, I thought that Abby might be a bit afraid. My mom even dug out an old picture of me with Tigger at Disneyland when I was her age and i was pretty freaked out. And I had been a big fan of Tigger. Apparently, a big fan. So I knew there was no telling how she would react. After the face painting she said, "mom! let's go outside and meet Hello Kitty!". Here we go, right? I braced myself for a meltdown. But she surprised me. While most of the other 4 year olds stood far off, watching that big Kitty, Abby marched right up, hopped on her lap and put her hands up to her face and started telling her secrets. "Hello Kitty! Hi Hello Kitty! Hello Kitty! Hi!"
And here she is with the birthday girl...
Hello Kitty was trying to get a few other girls interested in hanging with her and when it was time to go inside, she grabbed their hands, with Abby trailing behind. I don't think Abby stopped talking to Hello Kitty once she was off of her lap. "Helloooooo Kitttttttyyyyyyyy! Wait for me! Mom! It's Hello Kitty!"
And it continued for another 10 minutes until I finally had to give Hello Kitty a break from her chatting. Whew! I wonder how she's going to treat Santa! In fact, Hello Kitty got her really thinking about Santa and the other day in the car she said, "Mom. I think Santa is going to cut his beard. Maybe Mrs. Claus will do it for him. Maybe. Maybe not. We'll see."And as we left, she was still glassy-eyed from all of the Hello Kitty action -- with Hello Kitty balloon and sunglasses in hand.

Things, They Are A'changing

Oh, for the love of all things good.... Abigail's bed finally arrived. It took a full 6 weeks to get here. Whew! They did make it by hand but the time it took made it seem like they went to India to pick out the thread. After days and days of talking this bed business up, it finally got here. Although she seemed more than ready, she probably wasn't as ready as I was to get Ford out of our room and into the crib that Abby has been in. "It's here, guys! Right in here!"
It quickly became a "hurrah! hurrah!" family affair with grandmama taking pictures (thank you!)...
Getting ready to plop the 89 pounder down...
Giving it a nice little jump to see if it sizes up...
Trying it out together...
With only a sheet, both Alice the blabla and bun bun love it, too.
And we've never looked back! She stays in bed (this could change at a moment's notice, right?) at night but hardly naps during the day. Perhaps it's because it's as bright as the noon day sun in her room at naptime. We're taking care of that (thank you black out shades!). Another big hurdle accomplished. Honestly, when I think back to two years ago -- to my 8 pound, 4 month old girl getting ready to have open heart surgery, I can't believe how far she's come. I know -- it's just poop in a toilet and sleeping in a big bed, but to me... it's everything. 396. chocolate chip cookies 397. hello kitty (pictures to come) 398. sleeping for at least a few hours without being touched by a child 399. remembering our trip to austin. bliss!
