We've had some photo/computer hiccups lately. Sorry for the lag! Here is a catch-up post so we can move on to the most recent event -- Halloween!
This had to be documented. The kids actually help hands recently. In Costco. It was miraculous.
Abby and Ford had a playdate with my dear friend from high school's daughter. There was serious princess/jazzercise things happening.
These ridiculously cute slippers came in the mail from Grandma. Yes, she made them.
The kids went to a birthday party in the late afternoon, in October, where there were water balloons (sorry, east coast friends). Note the hand-me-down Lily Pulitzer dress. I'll never get that on her again so I had to document it.
This was obviously pre-haircut (dang, I miss that hair)...
There was a fairy sighting in our neighborhood.
"Mom, You can call me Tink for short, but for long you can call me Tinkerbell, Super Fairy."
We've done loads (and loads) of laundry...
It was so hot a few weeks ago, we lived in bathing suits (and ate cookies!)...

First Hair Cut
My sweet curly-haired boy is no longer. His sweet baby curls were gone in the whirl of Daddy's clippers -- the whole thing took about 10 minutes. But boy is our little man a cutie with his hair cut.
The first curl...
The back...
The front! With the hair master...
A boy and his doggie (he's obviously getting used to the chill he's experiencing without his locks!)...
The toes and the hair combo. It just kills me.
Fordy is now trying to say everything. I think I've gotten so used to only hearing from Abby that I forget to ask him sometimes what he'd like. Never fear... he's starting to speak up. Baby, Bonk and Mmm-bop (Hanson song, anyone?) are some of his new favs.
744. hair to cut!
745. a boy who sleeps in, finally!
746. washing machine. seriously. best modern invention.
747. work!
748. time to do bsf, even with the extra work

Three Years Ago Today
Right now, three years ago, I was on the phone with my amazing lactation consultant who was walking me through a minute by minute situation for pumping and feeding Abby while in the hospital for her heart surgery. Three years ago. I can still remember it so well. Cynthia was a gift from God. She assuaged so many of my "practical"fears in that phone call. And soon after that, I remember heading to bed, my alarm set for 2am for Abby's last feeding. We needed to leave for the hospital at 4:30am so sleep was short.
In her jammies, 3 years ago, heading to bed, none the wiser...
What is so very cool to me now is that a virtual stranger to us at the time offered to give her blood to Abby for the surgery. This stranger became a friend and now, our daughters are very close friends. In fact, today they did ballet together (they are on either side of their pal, Emerson).
Isn't that amazing? That this person who blessed our lives through the gift of her blood has moved to our town and now our daughters, who had almost the same due date are BFFs? It's so cool how God moves and orchestrates all things, isn't it?
And while I've given these stats before, it seems appropriate to do it again...
-- Congenital Heart Defects are the #1 birth defect and the #1 cause of infant death related to birth defects.
--1 out of every 100-150 babies born will have a CHD. (1 out of every 800-1000 babies born has Downs Syndrome).
--In the US there are nearly twice as many deaths due to CHD than that of all forms of childhood cancers combined. Yet there is 5 times more research for pediatric cancer than for CHD.
--There are approximately 35 know Congenital Heart Defects.
--With advances in medicine, many of those born with CHD will have their first and sometimes only corrective surgery before age 2.
And here she is, the next morning waiting to go to surgery...
I wrote these words a week or so before surgery...
Now that we have a date on the calendar, my heart is flooded with hope! Many, many times during those months, I read Spurgeon's wise words :
"Who told you that the night would never end in day? Who told you that the sea of circumstances would ebb out till there should be nothing left but long leagues of the mud of horrible poverty? Who told you that the winter of your discontent would proceed from frost to frost, from snow, and ice, and hail, to deeper snow, and yet more heavy tempest of despair? Don't you know that day follows night, that flood comes after ebb, that spring and summer succeed winter? Then hope! Hope forever! For God will not fail you. Do you not know that your God loves you in the midst of all this?"
..........
Even now, three years later, I can't escape the goodness of God and the hope that he brought us then, and does now.
A few weeks ago, we went to Abby's yearly cardiology check up. I actually forgot to schedule it. Again. I did the same thing last year. It's just not on my radar anymore. I do not ever worry about her heart. And yet, leaving, just like last year, I was so convicted as I heard him say, "thing look good on the Echo... she has no restrictions" that I need to remain prayerful that her little heart continues to grow correctly and that everything keeps going well. It was a humbling reminder that we just don't know for certain what is going to happen in life. But do know life is precious. Oh, how we know this. Especially on anniversaries like this.
I think tomorrow she can have the biggest scoop of ice cream she's ever seen. Here's to happiness.

Math Problems
Recently I heard something on npr about Bedtime Math. After you read your child a story, why not add in a math problem? Sounded good to me... It gets emailed to me, which makes it even easier and so, we do it from time to time. The whole idea of math got Abby's wheels turning and now, whenever we're idle for more than a few minutes she'll say, "Mom! How about a math problem?!" We've kept it pretty easy so far but also tried to keep it interesting...
If you've got 3 Hello Kitty clips and 3 princess clips, how many clips do you have?
Immediate interest!
For some reason, whenever we're on the swing set, she wants me to light up her life with a little math. I love it. If I'd set my mind to it, she probably could've learned French by now, too.... but that's for another day, right? Which means I'd probably have to re-learn it myself.
In other news, our girl can suddenly ride a big wheel/tricycle. Her feet can reach! She was pretty proud of herself today and she got the hang of it.
And while she was rejoicing about that, Ford was screaming, "Baby! Baaaaby! Baabyyyyy!" His new favorite word. All babies laying around should be on guard -- he'll hug and kiss with abandon. Or try to put their shoes on his feet.

103 in October
Today is the first day that I can remember as of late when I've opened a door or window in the morning and I wasn't slammed in the face with hot air. It's actually going to only be in the 80s today. Hallelujah.
But yesterday and the day before and for many days before that, it's been hot. So hot, that we've been re-living our summer swim days with sprinklers and sunscreen.
Thankfully the kids still think it's pretty cool.
And today as Abby is as school and Ford is sleeping, I actually have an hour to myself. Which means that one bathroom got clean, the family room got picked up and I made three phone calls. Alone. I am a new person. See? That's all it takes. I tell ya, the kid's grandparents were on to something by spacing out their kids by 4 years. You are almost never at home with all kids at the same time for an entire day - all in the name of education which masks mom's sanity.
Both Abby and Mommy are loving this school thing, especially since I get her the rest of the day, all to myself.

733. grace bigger than fear

Fairy Party
Oh. My. Goodness. I just realized that I failed to mention the party of Abby's summer, the fairy party that she attended for her dear friend, Gracie's birthday.
Abby finally wanted to wear her tutu leotard (although she never did put it on for ballet)...and let me do some crazy "party hair" for the occasion (thanks, Target clips!)... after we found out that fairy gear was allowed.
She and bunny were ready to go!
Once we got there, we traversed through the fairy woods to where the fun was going on...
And as we waited for the guests to arrive, she got to snuggle with the birthday girl. They both look serious...but I think they are just contemplating pixie dust and the physics behind it.
Soon, Queen Laura was applying glitter to the girls' arms and legs ...
And Abby hung with the five year olds (there is a really big difference between three and five, I was reminded!) and listened to all of the interesting fairy news that she had to tell them in her perfectly (fake) British accent. Mostly, she listened really intently, bunny at the ready...
And pointed her wand when instructed....
And got pixie dust so she could fly when need be...
And they all searched for fairies high and low. According to Abby, they even saw some. Imagine that.
And she saw her pal Emerson, the birthday girls cousin...two little pint sized wonders...
And of course she had to be front and center for the candle, blowing-out situation.
It was a beautiful, magical birthday party and we both felt so blessed to be there. Happy birthday Gracie!
