Hot and Bothered Park Day

The weather was gorgeous last week (it's since snowed not too far from us) and I learned two things. We really need to leave the house and hit the park more often and Ford will stand up every single chance he gets. Forget crawling. This guy wants to get up. Kinda like this triple-phase stroller situation...

Yep. The view is pretty nice up here.

Happy 9 months Fordy!

Until today, Ford was still feeling kinda funky. Most of the day, he looked somewhat like this.

Is it a tooth coming in? Is it the residual cold? Is he becoming a grumpy old man? Or is he just concentrating really hard so he can stand...

Yep. That's probably it. Constantly standing and bouncing. His favorite "he knows better" thing to do is head for the dog bowl and if it doesn't come crashing over when he pulls on it, to stand at it and splash around. In Red's water dish. Like it's a bathtub. Disgusting. Needless to say, we are washing hand incessantly now!
After his 9 month appointment, we found out he's long and lean, just like his sister. She's got about 6 pounds on him at this point. This boys eats food nonstop and is still only in the 6th percentile for weight. Guess my dream of having a chubby baby is never going to happen. The freshman 15. I guess I'll hold out hope for that.
This month has been a biggie. Suddenly he's chatting up a storm, engaging more, standing and wanting to walk...next thing I know he's going to be asking for the keys to the car.

X and Cake Pops

A week of kisses and cake pops. Does life get better?

Grandmama visited today and gave me three. whole. hours. to myself. That was three entire hours. Whew. I hardly knew how to calm myself down enough to enjoy it. A little kindle reading, coffee, treats and a pedicure. I think I had enough spoiling today to last me all year.

While I was gone, she and Abby painted and apparently Abby kept asking how to do things. "Show me this, Grandma. Show me how to hold the brush..." I love hearing stories like this instead of the typical things I hear out of her mouth - "I'm never going to school!" "No, Ford! You cannot look at my shopping cart!"

Today did all of us a lot of good -- thanks to you, Grandmama!

Piggies

To piggie or not to piggie?

When your normal hair day looks like this, I think the answer is always yes.

I won't, I can't be thankful for the pre-brushed hair but I am so thankful that her "stool" continues to make an appearance in the kitchen so she can "help" do the dishes. A few more months and this girl will be sewing me some clothes. Now if she'd just learn to fold laundry!

Weather

Let's talk about the weather, shall we? It's been crazy here lately! One day we look like this.... (thanks Little Grandma for the hats!)...
With roaring winds that bring these kinds of clouds...
And the next thing you know, the heat is off and it's 70 in the sunshine.

I used to despise warm holidays in the winter. Christmas was made for snow. I was spoiled going to my parents house every holiday and trudging through the snow, getting snowed in, going skiing, snow-shoeing...and loving every minute of it. Hot cocoa never tasted so good. But after living in Pasadena for as long as I have, I fell in love with our mild Christmas this year. And the fact that we need a new roof made me fall in love with the lack of rain we've gotten this year, too. Next year, bring on the water... but for now, I'm thankful for warm and dry.

I bet most guys would beg to differ, but I would always rather be warm than cold, wouldn't you? Yep. I thought so. Viva la sunshine!

House of Plague

Things have been quiet around here lately. Mostly because we've been dealing with sickness for a week and a half. A straight week and a half where the kids have swapped germs and shared the love of mucus. They've even kindly passed it along to us, too. It's times like this that I wonder how we are ever healthy. We are knee deep in chesty coughs, clear runny noses and midnight sore throats. Praise the Lord Ford is sleeping well despite his angry sinus situation.

To commiserate, bunny has gotten a few dozen band-aids that don't come off, even in the washing machine.

And we roam around in our PJs (or the next best thing) waiting for nap time... and for the rain to stop. I really can't wait for spring. It won't be here a moment too soon.

Whew. That Makes 50!

And a late, great happy 50th to my sweet parents. Look at these lovebirds. Still happy after all these years.    Who doesn't love a little wine with lunch on their anniversary? Live it up, you two... you've got a slew of grandkids to keep setting a great example for.

Sickie

Funny how fast our girl can go from this....

To this....

I think it took 30 minutes to get from healthy to bad. Like 102.5 bad. Yuck.

And now, today, she's good save a runny nose. We've been so blessed with health, I can hardly complain. Here's praying that it doesn't migrate over to Fordy!

Where's Waldo?

Many of you remember the classic Halloween picture of our friend Todd (who was Waldo) and Abby...

Abby knew who Waldo was because she'd absconded with some of Grant's childhood "Where's Waldo" books that we'd found in our garage. I figured Abby would never pick that book over, say, Penelope the Princess. Yet again, the girl surprises me. She throws open the Waldo books and says, "Okay, mom. Let me know when you find him. Then, give me a hint!" She never tires of it. "It's on your side" I'll say... and she bends down, getting really close to the page... "Mom! Where?" And usually she looks until she finds him. I expect her to yell "Found him!" the way I used to yell "Yatzee!" but she just silently moves her little finger over the spot where he's hiding with a bright smile on her little lips. Simple pleasures, right?

And speaking of reading, I read this today from Mem Fox, children's author :

Q: What, in your opinion, makes a child fall in love with reading?
A: The same: reading endlessly, many books a day, often the same book over and over again. Don’t just read here or there a couple of times a week. Read my book Reading Magic and it will all fall into place; your child will not fail to learn to read easily and quickly and happily.
We have always read with Abby, multiple times a day. Before she could talk she would be "reading" in her room by herself. But I'm realizing that with Ford I just don't have the time to sit and read to him before every nap, before bed, during the day... so this is my new motivation. To make time, everyday, to read with them both. Amen.

Groundhog Day

Many days I wake up and feel like it's Groundhog Day. Well, it was Groundhog Day last week but that's not what I mean. Have you seen the movie? The same thing starts every morning when the alarm clock goes off. A complete repeat of the day before.

Our version goes like this, sans Bill Murray. Abby comes running in (ever earlier, every morning, it seems) and snuggles (is very loud) for about half an hour. Then Fordy comes to bed for a bit and three of us get up, leaving Grant to get some shut eye since he was surely the one who got up three times to cover the dog with a blanket during the night. No kidding.

About this time, I wish I was a coffee drinker simply because something, anything to get me motivated to make one of three breakfasts that we always make is sorely needed. Then that passes, I wake up and off we go. Pancakes/oatmeal/fruit/waffles/eggs in some order or another gets rolling. And now, we have sweet Fordy to think about. Yet another milk to buy (goat) and butter spread for yet another kind of gluten free waffle. And that's just the beginning.

After breakfast, we all get dressed (which takes 30 minutes, 45 if you count combing Abby's hair). Inevitably, Fordy needs another diaper change as we're heading out the door to walk Red, which we need to do before Fordy's first nap -- which is always a race against the clock. Lately, he's falling asleep in the stoller toward the end and then getting them both inside, getting Ford down, keeping Abby quiet for a spell....

When he wakes up, we usually run an errand, (deviating from Trader Joes/Ralphs/Whole Foods/Target in this hour is a real treat) are home for lunch and then play in the front yard (a little vitamin d for us all) before naps for both kids at 2ish. From here, my day gets really exciting. Shower time! That is, if I'm not cleaning something first. Or checking email. Or making a phone call. Then, showering usually waits (sorry if you stop by in this time frame...not pretty!). Ford wakes up after an hour, we play till Abby wakes up and it's almost time to start dinner at 5pm.

 Groundhog day?! Yes!

There are moments of fun, comedy, insanity and thoughts of going to Bora Bora by myself all mixed in there. And good moments. And bad moments. And lots and lots of teaching moments, which I pray I am worthy of taking on. And I love my days, I really do.

But once in awhile, something happens. Something magical. Something new. Today, it was the harmonica. She's had it for a year or so.... and suddenly, she gets it. Take a listen.

Our girl has been rewatching a video that her Grandmama gave her with a bunch of babies making music. It's her new favorite. And now, she can join in.
